Released in 2015, this action-comedy stars Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara and follows a by-the-book cop who is tasked with protecting the widow of a drug boss as they travel across Texas. Watching these two films back-to-back truly proves that the premise of an action movie can indeed be ridiculous, so long as the characters feel grounded in reality and they aren’t just there to serve as pawns in an intense action sequence. While Kathryn Bigelow's film from the '90s is an exploration of masculinity which allows the viewer to get into the heads of both Swayze’s and Reeves’s characters, the two leads in the updated version are exceedingly flat and humorless. But all the spectacle doesn’t distract from the fact that the film sucks all the fun and character development out of the original story. With a much bigger budget, Point Break features its fair share of extreme stunts and impressive action sequences. Both films follow undercover cop Johnny Utah, who infiltrates a group of adrenaline junkies after Utah suspects them of carrying out a string of robberies. When they considered rebooting Point Break, they should have taken that same stance and just didnt. This 2015 film isn’t just a terrible action movie, but it’s also a totally unnecessary remake of the 1991 cult classic starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. It would be akin to rebooting Terminator 2. But in order to like this it's almost necessary to have never seen the original because the original is a good film from an era where films were just better. It's not like a SYFY original or anything. The story is pretty clear and it's not any different than the original. I think they are just wanting to complain. A lot of reviews here jump right to comparing it to the original and claims of there being no story. To add insult to injury, the scenes run with certain verbatim to the original but always with a fresh turd twist to it to make it run a little more like a mountain dew commercial than a film to be taken seriously. And that's just one of the ridiculous adrenaline junkie things they do here first try with masterful perfection. I mean, a random trip to Angel Falls to fly up free solo with zero preparation? Expert climbers can't do that even if they weren't free soloing it and they both just storm right up it like it was in their back yard their whole lives. But there comes a point when extreme is too extreme and suspension of disbelief can no longer be held. This movie wouldn't receive half the scrutiny if they just called it something else because Point Break it is NOT! As a film, it's hugely impossible but no more so than any James Bond film. But that is one plus point on a terrible and needless reboot. I got to give it credit, all thought they are totally not needed for this story, the in camera stunts are impressive. Plus you know after the video dropped of the stolen diamonds raining down on a poor African country the Government would be taking those diamonds back at gun point and shooting everyone. The last thing the audience would want is a wagging finger of shame because of the problems of poor countries. Bodhi and his crew only robbed banks because they saw "Endless Summer" way too often and wanted to keep their lazy lifestyle of surfing the world going without a day job. His friend dies by accident during a stunt so his next step is join the FBI? WTF! Also the last thing a Point Break movie needs is social commentary about the wealth divide. First of all, Johnny was not some extreme stunt guy, he was a college football star. Adding more stunts isn't adding something new or improving a near flawless movie at all. A good reboot improves or adds something the original was missing.
